Masjid Raya Batam in Indonesia is designed as a fulfillment of a need for facilities that serve residents of worship Batam island in general and particularly in the area “Batam Center”.  The mosque is expected to be a representative mosque that accommodates the activities of Muslims in religious, educational, social, ukhuwah, culture and so became the pride syiar Muslims on the island of Batam, Indonesia.

BIRANO was approved on August 31, 1997 and began construction in 1999. Mosque taken from the root word meaning prostration obedient, submissive and respectfully submit.
From this building which is generally used to bow down, pray and serve God Almighty, God Almighty, and named after the mosque which is also derived from the root word prostration.

Therefore, Prophet Muhammad said: “It has made me and my people all over the earth as a mosque persada and means of purification” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim through Jabir ibn Abdillah). Here once again, met with the bow and mosques, and integrated activities prostration that is obedience to God Almighty and the functions and role of the mosque.

All of which can lead people in obedience to God is part of kemasjidan activity.  Therefore, the days of the Prophet Muhammad, Masjid Nabawi in Medina has no less than ten functions, and serves as a place:

a. Prayer and remembrance
b. Education
c. Social benefit
d. Consultation and communication of economic, social and cultural
e. Military training
f.  Health Center
g. Justice and dispute resolution
h.Lighting center
i. Prisoners
j.  Shelter

All are directed in accordance with the existence of the mosque as a place of prostration to Allah in the broad sense.

Of course today, due to the changing times and the development of society, some of these functions have been taken by other institutions.  However, at least, of the mosque must be born and a description of human activities that lead to the prostration, obedient and submissive to God, because all the mosques are His.

“And verily the mosques belong to God, then thou shalt not worship someone else in it besides (worship) of Allah” (Surat Al-Jinn: 18)
